Paramount must be pretty certain it has a hit on its hands with JJ Abrams’s big screen revamp of Star Trek, because the company has already commissioned a script for a sequel.
Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof have already been hired to pen the screenplay for Trek XII. The trio is aiming to deliver their script by Christmas for what would likely be a summer 2011 release. Orci and Kurtman wrote the script for Abrams’s first Trek movie. Abrams will produce, but there is no word yet on whether he will also direct the sequel, reports Variety .
Kurtzman has said that the exact nature of the storyline will partly depend on audience reaction to the first Trek-reboot movie, due out in May: “Obviously we discussed ideas, but we are waiting to see how audiences respond next month. With a franchise rebirth, the first movie has to be about origin. But with a second, you have the opportunity to explore incredibly exciting things. We'll be ambitious about what we'll do."
