Why you can trust 12DOVE
Passion and obsession are the watchwords of northern soul, a British music scene revolving around the love and pursuit of rare American soul tunes. Fittingly, Elaine Constantine’s 1974-set coming-of-ager (centred on newcomers Josh Whitehouse and Elliot James Langridge) is driven by detail – though it wisely eschews shots of Mods flicking through record racks for furious pill-popping and “dancing like Bruce Lee” in flares.
Sporadically engrossing, its highlight is a brilliant recreation of an all-night dance-a-thon at that northern soul mecca, the legendary Wigan Casino.
