Nolan on Superman and Batman Ends?

It sounded like fanboy wishful thinking, but no… Christopher Nolan talks to The LA Times about his plans as the new movie godftaher of DC’s top two

And now, in The LA Times , he finally talks about his new role, revealing some interesting titbits about how he landed the dual role and his plans for both the Superman reboot and his third Batman film.

“It’s very exciting; we have a fantastic story,” says of Superman. “And we feel we can do it right. We know the milieu, if you will, we know the genre and how to get it done right.”

The initial impetus to tackle Superman actually came when Nolan and his Batman scriptwriter David Goyer were struggling over where to go with the sequel to The Dark Knight . Apparently, Goyer started daydreaming about how he would tackle a story about the Man Of Steel (which, the article claims, has not been decided as a title for the film).

“He basically told me, ‘I have this thought about how you would approach Superman,’” Nolan recalls. “I immediately got it, loved it and thought: ‘That is a way of approaching the story I’ve never seen before that makes it incredibly exciting.’ I wanted to get [wife and producer] Emma [Thompson] and I involved in shepherding the project right away and getting it to the studio and getting it going in an exciting way.”

Goyer is now writing the screenplay, and Nolan will produce though not direct. “A lot of people have approached Superman in a lot of different ways. I only know the way that has worked for us that's what I know how to do,” adds Nolan.

Meanwhile, that impasse Goyer and Nolan reached over the next Batman movie has also been breached, though he seems pretty adamant this will be his last time overseeing a movie version of Gotham’s masked anti-hero: “Without getting into specifics, the key thing that makes the third film a great possibility for us is that we want to finish our story, and in viewing it as the finishing of a story rather than infinitely blowing up the balloon and expanding the story. We have a great ensemble, that’s one of the attractions of doing another film, since we’ve been having a great time for years.”
