No Country sweeps the Oscars
The Coens win the crown...
It was definitely the Coen brothers’ night at the 80th Academy Awards, which happened on a rainy night in Los Angeles.
No Country For Old Men won most of its nominated categories, beating There Will Be Blood to Best Picture, Director, and Adapted Screenplay. And Javier Bardem took Best Supporting Actor to no one’s surprise. But Daniel Day-Lewis nabbed Best Actor for Blood, while Marion Cotillard won Best Actress for her turn as singer Edith Piaf in La Vie En Rose.
Juno’s Diablo Cody waltzed away with Best Original Screenplay, but there was a nice surprise in Best Original Song, which saw Once snatch the golden gong from the triple threat jaws of Enchanted’s nominations. And, yes, Pixar did it again, with Ratatouille nabbing Best Animated Feature.
It wasn’t the most memorable Oscar night ever, but it had its moments, with our favourite being Once’s Marketa Irglova being brought back on stage to give her speech properly after she was cruelly played off before saying a word.
