The stone effect on the paint is impressive - talk us through the process of achieving that.
Stokes: The Wii’s reflective finish was a concern because paints will never stick to it for long. After dismantling the Wii I had to sand each panel and button to the plastic. It was then primed and sanded three more times before base colors and textures were added. I wanted a finish that would last, and look as though it came from the factory. Out of respect to its new owner I can’t give the exact how-to details, because I’d like them to have a one-of-a-kind for as long as possible. Several densities of paint and multiple metallic grays and blacks were used for the final look.
Have you been surprised by the reaction to your work?
Stokes: I’ve been floored by the worldwide coverage it’s received. The eBay ad got over 80,000 views from 35 countries. When I Googled “zelda wii mod” I found over six pages of reviews. I even made it onto a popular technology show in the States.
