Tilda Swinton’s Italian spectacle I Am Love was viewed as a bit of a highlight of Sundance 2010.
Directed by Luca Guadagnino, it has drawn comparisons with Luchino Visconti’s classic flick The Leopard thanks to its sumptuous cinematography and grandiose themes of family, love, betrayal and marriage.
Well, ahead of its release here in the UK this Friday 9 April, a new trailer has been unveiled for the film. And, in terms of accurately reflecting the feel and content of a film, it’s one of the best trailers we’ve seen in a while.
Like the film’s flirtations with daftness and a non-narrative structure, the trailer relies on startling imagery, soaring performances and a bone-chilling, hair-risingly elegant score.
The story such as it is follows Emma Recchi (Swinton), a Russian immigrant who married into a wealthy Italian family and has felt suffocated by her loveless union ever since. Soon she’s having an affair with her son’s new friend, a chef.
Incorporating a storyline about the Recchi’s family business being passed down through the generations, I Am Love is a fulsome, operatic delight.
