Star Wars: The Force Awakens concept art shows you the movie you didn't get

Industrial Light & Magic has decided to show off some of Star Wars Episode 7's concept art used at various stages of making the film, and holy hell is it all the pretty.

As well as looking lovely it's actually got a lot of stuff that never made it into the final film. So here's an alternate take on Old Luke, for example:

And and equally old looking beardy Solo:

The interesting thing with that image is what is he facing off against? That's clearly a droid but was it another character we never got to see, or just a mood piece? Either way, I want that on my wall now.

While we're staying with Solo, this piece of art seems to show Han, Chewie and Rey getting out onto the roof of the Falcon through a never before seen door in the cockpit. That certainly never made it to any film.

There's also a few looks at some alternate Kylo Rens, including what can only be called 'The Space Balls' take on helmet design:

And this shot showing another early look and some clearly 'not quite there yet' Stormtroopers:

Plus we have a close but no banana 'goat eye' version of BB-8 that's definitely less endearing than the one in the film:

There's also a few variations on things we did finally see on screen. This is definitely Finn, post-crash still holding Poe's Jacket, for example, but that encounter with a skiff full of aliens in the desert never happened (that ship appears twice in the concept art so the idea was clearly nearly a thing):

There's also a nice take on the final battle between Finn/Rey and Ren, clearly a long time before the final script, cast or costumes were locked down:

However, I don't remember seeing this place in the final film at all:

Directed by Rian Johnson and starring Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Laura Dern, Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, Gwendoline Christie, and Benicio del Toro, Star Wars: Episode 8 opens on December 15, 2017.
