New Rocket League mode switches focus from football to basketball

First Rocket League transformed (and, in many ways, improved) football games as we know them with its car-based, boost-focused interpretation of what Americans call saaaaaccer – and now it looks set to do the same thing for basketball.

With college tournament March Madness getting underway on March 15th, developer Psyonix sent out a tweet unveiling the first screenshot for a new b'ball-centric mode within Rocket League. Using the hashtag #rocketleaguehoops, it simply stated, "March Madness is just around the corner. Great time to tease the mode we're working on next."

No additional details have been so much as teased, but fan reaction – using the same hashtag – was universally positive regardless. "This is f****** epic and insane at the same time, love it!" wrote @crashratchet008, while @LeonStott went for a more succinct, "Oh my God."

Best tweet of all came from someone within the development team – Psyonix artist Adam Beckwith. "Can't wait to dress up my Rocket League car with some Seattle SuperSonics colors," he wrote. "Eat shit, OKC Thunder."

[In a highly controversial move, the Supersonics moved to Oklahoma in 2008, leaving Seattle without a professional basketball team.]

Rocket League is out now on PS4, Xbox One and PC.

I'm GamesRadar's sports editor, and obsessed with NFL, WWE, MLB, AEW, and occasionally things that don't have a three-letter acronym – such as Chvrches, Bill Bryson, and Streets Of Rage 4. (All the Streets Of Rage games, actually.) Even after three decades I still have a soft spot for Euro Boss on the Amstrad CPC 464+.
