Last week's reveal of Konami's 3DS Layton look-alike, Doctor Lautrec, had us anxious to see how Level-5's own Professor Layton and The Mask of Miracle for the 3DS would compete. Turns out, the puzzle gods must have heard our pleas, because a new Japanese trailer for Layton's next chapter has been released, and it looks like Level-5 is ready to come out swinging.
Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle is the next chapterin the planned 'prequel' trilogy; the first of which, theSpectre's Flute, is already stumping gamers in Japan. The new 3DS game will see the Professor and his assistant Luke tracking down the main baddie, Jean Descole, andhis magical mask in the urban sprawl of Casino City. The game will also dig deeper into Professor Layton's past, giving players a glimpse at a top hat-free Layton and his ill-fated friend. At least we think he's ill-fated, as being dangled over a well in flashbacks rarely turns out for the best.
Judging by the fluid animations and 3DS modeling alone, Mask of Miracle should be a visual treat on the 3DS. Throw in multidimensional puzzles and the series' trademark storytelling and this may mark Professor Layton's biggest evolution yet.
Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle is slated for a Spring 2011 release.
