How Need for Speed became the model for racing games
Need for Speed: Most Wanted - 2005
That missing something - the boys in blue were back. Seeing your character hauled from his car, and forced to the ground and handcuffed made us even more determined to beat the cops next time. The free-roaming element remained, only now you could use the environment to stop cops while you concentrated on the job in hand - taking down every racer on the blacklist. Oh, and winning slick motors, of course. The addition of CG-alike live-action cut-scenes was welcome (as was the inclusion of Josie Maran as Mia), but there weren’t enough of them. It sold by the millions, though - and is still a highly accomplished, despite looking a little rough around the edges in the harsh light of day. But, for some reason, the night races were gone. Surely the ultimate Need for Speed game would be like this - but at night.
