Mortal Kombat pays for itself, sells 3 million

When Midway closed its doors in 2009, the future of the Mortal Kombat series was uncertain. The company sold off all its assets, many of them going to Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment, including the rights to the Mortal Kombat fighting franchise. Today, we learned that the acquisition has been financially worthwhile for WBIE. In an interview with the weekly publication MCV, Warner Brothers' Martin Tremblay revealed that the 2011 reboot of Mortal Kombat has sold nearly 3 million copies since it arrived on PS3 and Xbox 360 in April.

That makes Mortal Kombat an exceptionally successful fighting game. Tremblay emphasized that point by claiming that “Mortal Kombat has already paid for the acquisition of the Midway assets.” For comparison, Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 has sold about 2 million copies since February 2011, and Street Fighter IV has sold 3.1 million since February 2009.

MK hasn't been on the market as long as either of those games, and is actively supported by WBIE through DLC. Freddy Krueger was added to the game’s roster last week, and you can listen to Chris Antista explain how one of his moves is a reference to Nightmare on Elm Street 6 in our FAP:
