More Game Of Thrones For Season 3
“There’s almost another full episode’s worth of extra minutes spread across the season,” says co-showrunner Dan Weiss
Although we won’t be getting any extra episodes in Game Of Thrones season three, there will be up to extra episode’s worth of footage spread over the season’s run, co-showrunner Dan Weiss tells EW.com .
While season one’s episodes were generally almost an hour long, during season two, they tended to be nearer 52 minutes, though the season finale was significantly extended.
However, season three, which covers (roughly) the first half of George RR Martin’s third book in the A Song Of Ice And Fire series , A Storm Of Swords , will see a return to slightly longer episodes, with the distinct possibility of another super-sized finale.
“There’s almost another full episode’s worth of extra minutes spread across the season,” says Weiss. “One of the great liberties with HBO is we’re not forced to come in at a specific time. We can’t be under 50 minutes or over 60, but that gives us a lot of flexibility.”
Co-showrunner David Benioff adds that it’s, “A super-sized season, as befitting Storm of Swords,” referring to the fact that it’s the longest book in the series, and one of the fans’ favourites. “Last year we had a lot of 52-minute episodes. This year is a lot of 56, 57.”
“So for people clamoring for another episode, it’s in there,” confirms Weiss. “It’s just been cut into tiny pieces.”
