Monster Hunter movie "currently in planning", says the man behind the Resident Evil and Dead or Alive films. Yay?
Gratuitous bullet-time coming to Capcom's cerebral beast-slaying franchise?
Paul W.S. Anderson made the Mortal Kombat movie. He also produced the Dead or Alive movie, all of the Resident Evilmovies, and wrote and directed Alien vs. Predator. And now it seems he's in the early stages of development on a Monster Hunter adaptation. Excitement cannons on standby.
Speaking at a Japanese press even for the new Resident Evil film, Retribution, Anderson gleefully exclaimed "Recently, I've been loving Monster Hunter! A film conversion is currently in planning". Granted, the translated comments don't explicitly state that Anderson is the one doing the planning, but given that he'd just been asked which game he'd next like to adapt into a movie, the odds point towards this being another Capcom/Anderson project.
Of course, the original 1995 Mortal Kombat movie is the cleverest and most stunningly accurate video game adaptation ever made, in ways you'd probably never even realised, but while Anderson's seemingly endless work on the Resident Evil movies has turned repeated profits, none of those films has ever been what rational human beings would describe as 'good'. Will his delicate cinematic touch be a good fit for Monster Hunter's picturesque yet savage world? This space. Keep it watched.
Thanks, Andriasang. And RIP.
