Miyamoto on Wii 2: 'Don't ask!'
Vague confirmation of something we already knew
Nintendo has not officially announced any new console, but when pressed for information by Edge, legendary producer/designer Shigeru Miyamoto half-confirmed the rumors.
"Don't ask!" said Miyamoto. "Even when the Wii launched we were developing new hardware, work on 3DS had already started. It's a matter of when we announce it."
Regarding the possibility of an E3 announcement, he said, "Please wait. Be patient until we decide."
All the speculation is making patience a bit difficult, but it does seem probable that the announcement will happen soon. And, anyway, it's not as if we didn't know that Nintendo was working on a new console... it is a console manufacturer.
But if the rumors are to be believed, Nintendo's next system will be a major technological step forward from the Wii. Of course, if it really does release next year, it will likely only have a few years as top dog before Sony and Microsoft release their next generation PlayStation and Xbox iterations. Still, if true, it's a clever tactic - outdo the competition with a comparably underpowered but innovative system, then turn the tables again with a technological head start. I see what you did -er, may have done - there.
