Microsoft hearts PS3 hacker

Sony doesn't like George Hotz. He's one of the most infamous PS3 hackers and has gained notoriety because of his step-by-step online instructions about how to break the console's security mechanisms. Apple doesn't like Hotz either. He cracked the iPhone, too. But Microsoft is taking a different approach to the Hotz hacking spree.

On his blog, Hotzwrote - some might say "threatened" - that we was eager to get his hands on a Windows Phone 7 device. No doubt he wanted to see how long it would take before he could get under the hood of the new device.

But instead of just sitting idly by, Microsoft employee Brandon Watson contacted Hotzdirectly viaTwitter. Watson is the Director of Developer Experience for Windows Phone 7, and offered Hotz a brand new phone to dissect.

"#geohot if you want to build cool stuff on #wp7, send me email and the team will give you a phone - let dev creativity flourish #wp7dev," Watson Tweeted.

So Microsoft's giving Hotz the opportunity to use his skill and creativity for good, not evil. Of course, that depends on your feelings toward Microsoft. But nevertheless, it's a pretty keen gesture.

Meanwhile, the only present Hotz has received from Sony is a big fat lawsuit.
