Michael Fassbender is one of the busiest men in Hollywood right now, which is why it’s so heartening to hear him tapping into his inner geek to hypothesise on plot possibilities for a potential sequel to X-Men: First Class .
Speaking to IFC about the potential direction of the next movie, he posed the idea that Magneto might not necessarily be portrayed as a fully fledged villain.
“You know what’s interesting about Magneto and Professor X from the comic books as well,” said Fassbender, “is there’s such a complexity to their relationship. It’s not just like clear-cut enemies; they’re best friends as well.”
“In the comic books,” he continues, “even after they’ve had this sort of rift, Professor X asks Magneto to come back and look after the students at certain points... I think there’s always that complexity in their relationship and we want to keep that alive as possible, because that’s I think a really interesting thing - the conflict there.”
Production has yet to begin on the sequel, although Fox are confident that Matthew Vaughn will return to the director’s chair for a second time. Fassbender is a definite, however, as he’s on a multi-film contract. Well done whoever negotiated that little arrangement…
