MGS: Peace Walker turns into a bizarre nexus of cross-promotion

This morning, we were floored when a new trailer circulating the internets revealed that creatures from Monster Hunter are going to appear in Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. As you can see in the video below, the crossover (which brings together two of the PSP's strongest series) will enable Naked Snake and his crew to travel to a secret island off the coast of Costa Rica and test their skills against creatures like Velocipreys and massive Tigrexes.

What was even more surprising is that the Monster Hunter news was only the beginning. Since that trailer dropped, new reports (fueled by a press event last night in Tokyo) have steadily trickled out, revealing not only that the hay dive from Assassin's Creed – previously part of an April Fool's joke – will appear in the finished game, but that there'll also be a torrent of product placement from Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Sony, Axe and other brands. And on top of all that, Kotaku has reported that some sort of crossover between Peace Walker and the upcoming PS3/360 mecha-action game Front Mission Evolved is in the works as well.

Above: Almost makes this seem insignificant, doesn't it?

Aggressive cross-promotion like this isn't entirely surprising, considering Snake's long history of crossovers, and the appearance of Altair's robes and a functional iPod in Metal Gear Solid 4. But it's a lot to take in at once, and we're willing to bet we'll find out about even more when we see Peace Walker again later this month.
