The story behind Metro: Last Light can be a little confusing with all that's going on, but thankfully protagonist Artyom has been jotting down his intricate thoughts through the entire game. Each diary page that you find tells a deeper story of what is happening in the game and helps to put things into a little more detailed perspective than you get from chapter loading screens and conversations with other characters.
