San Francisco headbangers Metallica are the seventh-biggest-selling musical act in history. But it hasn't always been an easy ride: in the last five years, they've been through line-up reshuffles, rehab and enough queen bitching to populate Aliens Nos 5, 6 and 7. So it's bloody fortunate that Paradise Lost docu-makers Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky were there to chronicle every stumble.
The results are part enlightening, part embarrassing, the band's willingness to reveal their intimate moments sure to delight devotees and sidesplit detractors (Spinal Tap, anyone?). There's ex-guitarist/ Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine unloading 20 years' of demons on to founder member Lars Ulrich; new bassist Rob Trujillo gaping as he's offered a million bucks to join up; and group therapist Phil Towle stamping his feet as he's fired on camera. The jaded-millionaire angst is daft and tiresome... But boy, does it make for essential viewing.
