Get every Metal Gear Solid game for $90 in the latest PlayStation Sale
Have you been on the outside of the Metal Gear phenomenon this whole time, wondering what the hell we were on about when we gave Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain our Game of the Year 2015 award? The latest sale on the US PlayStation Store gives you the perfect opportunity to catch up - in fact, you can get every main MGS game on PS3 and PS4 for just about $80 all together, or $90 if you count the canonically questionable Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions and Portable Ops. But here are the ones you should definitely pick up.
Metal Gear Solid (PSOne Classic) for PS3 was $9.99, now $4.99: It's not technically the beginning of the Metal Gear storyline, but this is the cornerstone of the Metal Gear Solid series. Almost every character you meet, or who is even referenced here, will be important later on.
Metal Gear Solid HD Collection for PS3 was $39.99, now $19.99: This spruced-up bundle covers Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. Each one is essential to the story, and you'll want to pay special attention to Peace Walker to see how it leads up to the events of Metal Gear Solid 5.
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots for PS3 was $19.99, now $9.99: The final chapter of Solid Snake's story gives a satisfying conclusion to the modern/near-future arc of Metal Gear. Enjoy that handy octo-camo before you return to the past!
Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes for PS4 was $19.99, now $4.99: Skip this one if you're in a hurry, since you can catch up on its contribution to the Metal Gear story through cutscenes and audio tapes in The Phantom Pain. It's worth $5 just to see Kojima thumb his nose at Konami in a side mission, though.
Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain for PS4 was $59.99, now $40.19: Kojima's final Metal Gear Solid game is also his most ambitious, with a sprawling open-world full of infiltration possibilities and a mercenary army to raise and house. You'll be here a while.
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance - Ultimate Edition for PS3 was $29.99, now $7.49: This action game starring cyborg ninja Raiden is a side story and the least essential item on this list if you're looking for lore, but it's still a Platinum Games production: you'll have a grand old time chopping through mechs, bosses, and watermelons alike.

I got a BA in journalism from Central Michigan University - though the best education I received there was from CM Life, its student-run newspaper. Long before that, I started pursuing my degree in video games by bugging my older brother to let me play Zelda on the Super Nintendo. I've previously been a news intern for GameSpot, a news writer for CVG, and now I'm a staff writer here at GamesRadar.

Metal Gear Solid Delta dev says that Konami wants to make the remake feel familiar but not old: "Our whole goal [...] is to make sure that it still feels like the game that you played 20 years ago"
