Marvel's Spider-Man 2's most impressive feature is its bizarrely detailed rats
Even New York City's smallest residents look good
In Marvel's Spider-Man 2, even rats are full of detail - despite the fact you'll rarely interact with them.
As pointed out by Twitter user @GameDesignDan, even the smallest New York City residents look their best in the Spider-Man sequel. Take a look at the tweet below, and you'll see a fairly detailed model of a rat that can be found scurrying around in the game. Despite not playing a main role in the Insomanic title, the developer clearly put a lot of effort into its appearance as it has photorealistic fur and eyes, and even detailed whiskers and claws.
Although this doesn't sound like a big deal, it's surprising considering usually things that players won't interact with aren't nearly as detailed as this specific rat. In the replies to GameDesignDan's tweet though, one player has pointed out that you do get up close and personal with the rats during a Spider-Man 2 spider bots section in the game - so that's probably why they look as good as they do.

On the other end of the scale, you've got Marvel's Spider-Man 2's pigeons, which, as pointed out above, are nowhere near as detailed as the rats. Understandably, Insomniac probably didn't expect players to get as close to the pigeons as the player above, so it makes sense why this critter has fewer polygons going for it. Regardless, we're fans of it, just like we loved The Witcher 3's low-poly pigeons and Final Fantasy 14's low-poly grapes.
Unfortunately, for fans of Marvel's Spider-Man 2's low-poly boat people, we have some bad news. Now that Peter Parker and Miles Morales can get around New York City easier than ever, Insomniac has had to replace the hilarious (and only slightly terrifying) boat people with much more detailed, fully-fleshed human models. Obviously, this is the better choice for the sake of quality but it feels like the end of an era.

After studying Film Studies and Creative Writing at university, I was lucky enough to land a job as an intern at Player Two PR where I helped to release a number of indie titles. I then got even luckier when I became a Trainee News Writer at 12DOVE before being promoted to a fully-fledged News Writer after a year and a half of training. My expertise lies in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, cozy indies, and The Last of Us, but especially in the Kingdom Hearts series. I'm also known to write about the odd Korean drama for the Entertainment team every now and then.
