Marvel’s Avengers: Choose your hero - Captain America

Captain America wasn’t always the incredibly buff super soldier we know him as today. His immense strength and dexterity are the result of a secret testing program carried out by the U.S. government during WW2, in which a younger (and far less toned) Steve Rogers was injected with a serum that would push his body to its absolute limits.

Rogers would prove a vital part of the war effort, fighting back the Axis Powers and ensuring that the tide was eventually turned in favour of the United States and its allies. A hero of the Second World War, Captain America then disappeared in its aftermath, having been accidentally frozen in ice during a final confrontation with the enemy. That’s just the kind of the thing that can happen when you’re a Super Hero, I suppose.

His body would eventually be rediscovered several decades later by the Avengers and after a good deal of thawing, he returned to the living as something of a relic from a bygone era. But even the modern world has a need for heroes like Captain America, it turns out. Not only would he join the Avengers, he’d eventually go on to lead them as well.

In fact, he was leading them on A-Day, as San Francisco was attacked by an unknown enemy. As the other heroes rushed to the defence of the Golden Gate bridge, Captain America hung back to investigate what was happening on the Chimera Helicarrier.

This would turn out to be the real target of the day and although Cap was able to fight his way through the soldiers that stormed onto the ship, he couldn’t stop it from being destroyed in the end. Worse still, he’s thought to have been standing next to the Helicarrier’s power source when it exploded.

Captain America has now disappeared once again, this time for a further five years. Is he alive? Or did he really go down with the Chimera that day? Well, considering he’s a playable character in Marvel’s Avengers, we’re going to hazard a guess and say he’s out there somewhere. But who knows in what condition.

If you decide to play as him yourself, you’ll find that he’s got plenty to offer in a fight. A melee expert, he’s capable of dishing out an enormous amount of damage with abilities like the Brooklyn Brawler, which sees Cap jump into the air before slamming his shield into the ground and scattering any nearby foes.

And should you find yourself at a bit of a distance from your targets, that shield of his makes for an excellent ranged weapon that can even be chained across several enemies. Best of all, every successful hit is rewarded with that satisfying metallic clunk you’ll have heard a hundred times before now in the Marvel movies. That’s a good enough reason to play Captain America in itself, to be quite honest.
