Marvel’s Avengers: Choose your hero - Black Widow
Originally trained as a Soviet super-assassin, Black Widow is now dedicated to fighting the wrongs of her previous life as a founding member of the Avengers. Does that still involve the occasional bit of assassinating? Sure it does. But at least now Romanoff feels she’s using her unique skill set for the right reasons.
On A-Day, that involved taking on Taskmaster (whose actual name is Tony Masters, hilariously), a former SHIELD agent wreaking havoc on the Golden Gate Bridge. Although she’s successful in defeating him in single combat, it was to no avail. Mr Masters was nothing more than a distraction from the main event: the destruction of the Chimera Helicarrier.
With Captain America presumed dead and the other heroes outlawed, Romanoff has now done what she does best and disappeared off the grid. We don’t know exactly what she’s been up to in the years following A-Day, but rumour has it that she’s been secretly working to clear the Avengers’ name and prove their innocence after all.
In combat, Black Widow makes for an incredibly agile hero, leaping between enemies in the most acrobatic way possible. Her grappling hook is especially good for this, as it can be fired at a distant enemy to allow Romanoff to then hurl herself towards them, usually with a punch lined up and ready to land.
And what self-respecting spy wouldn’t come kitted out with a good set of gadgets? Black Widow has a few really interesting toys to play around with, like Widow’s Bite which can stun multiple enemies from a distance with its electrical charge. This one is great for getting out of trouble.
But perhaps the most useful piece of equipment in her entire arsenal is the dual pistols she comes equipped with from the start of the game. Not only are these decent weapons in their own right, with a few upgrades they can then be switched out for a powerful high-caliber revolver, or a pair of automatic pistols instead. Different guns for different situations, that’s the trick.
Black Widow is a fantastic damage dealer and alongside Iron Man, is probably the Avenger with the greatest ranged capabilities out of all the heroes available at launch. Hawkeye will have to do a lot to top this.
