Marvel is "committing" to a solo Black Widow movie, says Kevin Feige
Every Black Widow appearance in Marvel's Cinematic Universe begets more talk of a solo movie for Scarlett Johansson's resourceful heroine, but despite the increasing demand Marvel have yet to pull the trigger on a standalone film. With Captain America: Civil War now out in cinemas the conversation has only gotten louder, and thankfully Kevin Feige's latest update on Black Widow's MCU future seems promising;
"We’ve announced the next nine movies, ten counting Civil War, through the end of 2019", Feige told Deadline. "Where we go beyond that are ongoing discussions that we’ll focus on in the next few years because we have a lot to do before then. Of the characters that you’ve just mentioned I would say certainly the one creatively and emotionally that we are most committing to doing is Black Widow".
"We think she’s an amazing character", Feige continued. "We think Scarlett Johansson’s portrayal of her is amazing. She’s a lead Avenger and has amazing stories in her own right to tell that we think would be fun to turn into a standalone franchise".
While this makes for great reading, we have heard similar enthusiasm from Feige concerning a Black Widow solo movie for a while now with nothing coming to fruition. Marvel recently dropped The Inhumans from their Phase 3 slate - could a Black Widow standalone movie take its place? Here's hoping.
Directed by Joe Russo and Anthony Russo, and starring Chris Evans, Robert Downey, Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Chadwick Boseman, Tom Holland, Anthony Mackie, and Sebastian Stan, Captain America: Civil War is out now.
