Mario Tennis Open for 3DS hitting the courts May 20

Nintendo today revealed its world famous plumber (who seems to get involved in everything but plumbing) will hit the court this summer with the release of Mario Tennis Open for 3DS on May 20 in North America, and May 25 in the UK.

The launch (volley?) date was revealed during today's Nintendo Direct broadcast, and heralds the return of the all-star cartoon sport franchise, which started with Mario Tennis on the N64. The Camelot-developed sequel will sport full touch controls, and allow players to view the court from different angles using the 3DS's gyroscope function.

If rallying against soulless AI Nintendo mascots isn't your thing, Mario Tennis 3DS will also feature local and online multiplayer support for up to four players. Nintendo indicated its online component will be supported with matchmaking systems, leaderboards, medals, and unlockable achievements.

We've heard very little about Mario Tennis Open since it was first revealed at TGS 2011. Expect that to change as Nintendo warms up for its summer 2012 release.
