Make donations for Japan relief from the PlayStation Store

If you're looking for an easy, reliable way to donate to the Japanese relief effort, Sony is making the task as simple as pushing the X button.

In a post on the PlayStation Blog, Sony Computer Entertainment president Jack Tretton said, "Sony Computer Entertainment%26rsquo;s headquarters are located in Tokyo, and so we%26rsquo;ve heard firsthand of the disaster%26rsquo;s impact from our colleagues and friends. As we here in America watch the tragic events that continue to unfold, you might be left thinking, 'Is there any way I can help?'"

And of course, there are many ways for Americans to send aid. Sony is adding to the list of optionswith a special page on the PlayStation Store, allowing users to 'buy' a donation in the amount of $2, $5, $10, $25, or $50. Making a donation will also net you an exclusive Japanese PS3 theme.

Tretton promised 100% of all donations will go directly to theRed Cross. Sony takes nothing. However, some users were riled up when they noticed they were being charged tax on their donations.

In follow-upcomments to the blog post, Sony social media manager Jeff Rubenstein assured everyone that all taxes will be refunded in the form of PSN wallet credit. Apparently Sony didn't build a way for the PlayStation Store to offer tax-free items.

Despite that snag, Sony hopes you'll show your support.

"Many gamers in particular feel a special bond with Japan, even if they%26rsquo;ve never traveled there personally. Its ingenuity and innovation have shaped our industry, and its culture and style have brought a sense of community across the world," Tretton said. "Please join us now in helping the Japanese people during this great time of need. Together we can have a significant impact on the relief process."
