The newly announced Lost in Harmony is a music game. I say "music game," but I'm not sure I would call it a "rhythm game." That phrase brings to mind parties of people jamming on plastic instruments, waving their arms at a camera, or stomping their feet to flying arrows. Instead of those things, Lost in Harmony is a narrative experience, its story about a teenage boy escaping his life through dreams told through gorgeous art and an equally beautiful musical score.
"Magic happens when you see how, without any word, without any language form, you can provoke feelings into a multicultural audience by playing the right melody," says Yoan Fanise, the game's creative director. Fanise says that he wants to make a game that will touch people, much like his previous game about soldiers in WWI, Valiant Hearts, did.
As for the Haitian rapper Wyclef Jean, don't think his involvement is going to make the game into something frivolous; although he came to prominence after backing up Shakira on "Hips Don't Lie," his songs often feature an element of social commentary - "Sweetest Girl (Dollar Bill)" and "Million Voices" for example - and thoughtfulness. Besides, based on what I hear in the trailer, I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt for now.
Lost in Harmony has no announced platforms yet, but is scheduled for a 2016 release date.
