Not a remake of the 1987 Dudley Moore body-swap-com, this is another intimate, slow-burning exploration of Japanese family life from writer-director Hirokazu Koreeda ( I Wish ).
Ambitious architect Ryota (Masaharu Fukuyama) discovers that his six-year-old son Keita was swapped at birth with the offspring of a working-class suburban couple (Lily Franky, Yoko Maki).
Although a bit over-neat in its contrasts between the respective families, Like Father, Like Son remains an affecting film, thanks to Fukuyama’s understated turn and Koreeda’s typically graceful visual storytelling.
