This film was called Deceiver over in the States, apparently because American audiences might have thought it was some half-brother of Jim Carrey's Liar Liar. No chance of that: this is dark, twisted stuff. Rich, troubled playboy Tim Roth is suspected of murdering a prostitute (Renée Zellweger), and finds himself plugged into the polygraph by cops Chris Penn and Michael Rooker. Lots of shouting and furrowed brows in extreme close-up follow. Flashbacks flesh out the piece, but it's the big boys locked in the small room who supply the constant stream of tension - - and the odd shocking revelation.
