It’s been another weak weekend for the US box office as most of the new films – including Ghost Town with Ricky Gervais and animated ‘toon Igor - barely made a blip on the charts. It was left to Lakeview Terrace, starring Samuel L Jackson, to manage a decent haul.
It may not seem like it (aside from its mean streak), but Terrace was directed by Neil LaBute, seemingly doing studio penance for The Wicker Man. It managed $15 million. The Coens’ Burn After Reading held well in second, making $11.2 million. In third, the latest Dane Cook comedy effort arrived with just $8.3 million.
Fourth place found Igor, the animated monster ‘toon nabbing just $8 million despite boasting the voices of John Cusack and Steve Buscemi. At fifth, the Al Pacino/Robert De Niro cop thriller Righteous Kill suffered from poor word of mouth and made $7.7 million in its second weekend.
Bad news for Gervais
Tyler Perry’s The Family That Preys dropped 53% to sixth place with $7.5 million, while The Women slipped to seventh.
There was bad news for Ricky Gervais as Ghost Town failed to find all those fans across the pond who claim they love the original Office, making just $5.1 million in eighth. The Dark Knight finally began its fall from the top 10 at ninth and bringing up the rear in 10th was The House Bunny.
