Kevin Smith confirms his space comedy
And no, it’s not Ranger Danger
Kevin Smith has been hinting for a while now that he’s developing an sci-fi comedy.
But while speculation has been that it could be his long-cherished Ranger Danger And The Danger Rangers, Smith has now confirmed that it’s a new, separate project.
He has yet to release any actual details, but we do know it takes place on a spaceship. Which also means it’ll cost more than anything he’s made. “The moment someone steps out of the spaceship, it's going to cost a little more," he laughed to The Hollywood Reporter .
Waiting for Red State
This new film will cost $45-$50 million, and the tab may be picked up by The Weinstein Company, which has already gotten a look at a few pages of the script.
Smith also says the film will be a departure in another way for him: focus. “All the relationships in the flicks I've done have been done before, have been either a guy falling for a girl or two dudes hanging out in a 'bromantic' comedy. I wanted to explore a father and son."
Before he can even think about getting to it, though, he first has to track down financing for horror project Red State. That’s proving easier said than done, given the script’s pitch-dark, bloody tone.
But if this new space project means we get to see what the Star Wars-loving writer-director does when he gets a chance to create his own sci-fi story, count us in right now.
