Justice League will see the return of Lex Luthor, but he’s not the big cheese anymore

Hold onto your hats, because we’re getting not one but two villains in Justice League as Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor is going to return. An official press kit from Warner Bros has spilled the news, as its cast list features Jesse Eisenberg. Not surprising considering that in a deleted scene the somewhat eccentric genius implied in Batman vs Superman that he wasn’t quite done with battling super-powered citizens quite yet.

In case you need reminding, Luthor told Batman that “the bell’s already been rung… and they’ve heard it”. Who’s heard it? Well, the bald baddie goes on to say that “he’s hungry, he’s found us...and he’s coming”. We already suspect that the main villain will be Steppenwolf, so it’s likely that he and Lex will be teaming up to take on the Justice League. Having Luthor warning about someone being “hungry” suggests Steppenwolf’s boss Darkseid must be licking his lips, so perhaps all these powerful heroes are looking ripe for consuming. Darkseid could end up just being a scout. Doesn’t exactly bode well for the Justice League, does it?

It’s also been revealed that Connie Nielsen is going to star in Justice League too. As Queen of the Amazons and mother of Diana Prince (better known as Wonder Woman), we’re already going to get a glimpse of her in the Wonder Woman film due to be released next year. So far it’s not clear why she’ll be in Justice League, but Steppenwolf does have his eye on the Mother Box (a powerful galactic artefact) that the Amazons have in their keeping. Maybe she’ll be the last line of defense to prevent him from snatching them. We’ll just have to wait to find out!

Directed by Zack Snyder and starring Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, J.K. Simmons, Willem Dafoe, Amber Heard, Ezra Miller, and Ray Fisher, Justice League is currently scheduled for a November 17, 2017 release.
