Joss Whedon, director of Marvel's Avengers movies and King of Killing Off Lovable Characters, has said that we would be interested in working on a Star Wars film. Hypothetically speaking. In a recent interview with Complex, the personable filmmaker said that it was the Rogue One trailer that convinced him.
"I was like, 'I don't want to make a Star Wars movie. Like, god dammit, why?' But I saw the trailer for Rogue [One] awhile ago and I was like, 'I want to do that.' To make a Star Wars movie and not be wed to the bigger picture."
Now, to be clear, this is not something that is actively in the works, and Whedon was responding to a question over where he'd take his career next. "There are some times when you get micro-managed to death but with Marvel, they let me make two movies that were very much mine. So do I want to make James Bond movie? Yeah. Anne Hathaway does Catwoman again? Sure, I’m in. Do I want to make a Star Wars movie? Yeah," he said.
It's a bit funny to hear Whedon praise Marvel for letting him make two movies "that were very much" his, considering he's been pretty vocal about how constrained and compromised by studio executives his vision for Age of Ultron was.
But hey, while Star Wars and Marvel both fall under the shadow of Disney, the Star Wars universe is handled by an entirely different set of people. If Whedon's willing to give them a chance, so am I.
