Joss Whedon directed The Avengers to significant box-office and critical success, but there's still no official word on whether he'll return for a sequel in Phase 2.

The Avengers
has raked in almost $1.5b in worldwide grosses, making it the third highest-grossing movie of all time , domestically and internationally (and the biggest comic-book flick ever). It also has an impressively fresh 92% on Rotten Tomatoes .

A sequel was inevitable, and fans are keen to see Whedon return, though according to the man himself, he hasn't come to a decision yet.

Speaking at Comic-Con , where he appeared at a Firefly reunion panel, Whedon said, "I have not come to a decision on directing Avengers 2 yet… I am having too much fun with this [ reunion ] now."

It would seem to make sense to have Whedon return, as he pulled off the near impossible feat of juggling all those superhero egos in one movie (and he made the Hulk cool again).

He also ensured that the dialogue was as shiny as the FX, which is an all-too-rare treat in blockbuster seasons these days.

The Avengers 2 will open after the next round of Marvel movies, including Iron Man 3 , Thor 2 and Captain America 2 .
