Josh Trank's Boba Fett movie was axed seconds before its announcement
A year or so back, we were looking at three Star Wars standalone movies hitting movie screens. Rogue One, the Han Solo movie, and some unknown third title. At the time, rumors suggested that it would revolve around Boba Fett, with Han expected to take on a large supporting role. Well, if you're up on your Star Wars spin-offs, you'll know that the bounty hunter's origin story is no longer on the table.
But it was thiiiiiiiiis close to getting announced.
While we kinda knew that the Boba Fett was going to be directed by Josh Trank, EW has since confirmed the rumor. And not only that. The film was cancelled literally SECONDS before the studio planned to announce it.
See, the spin-off was primed for an official announcement at the Lucasfilm Celebration 2015. As hordes of press entered the event, Trank's name still appeared on giant screens promoting the Future Filmmakers panel about to take place. Yeah, he bailed right at the last moment.
This event was where we got a first look at that Rogue One concept art reel, and according to an additional report Lucasfilm had a similar little teaser lined up for the Boba movie too.
Will we ever see Fett headline his own movie? It looks highly likely that will happen at some point. In August 2015, Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy said they still had hopes of developing the film. "It's absolutely one of the stories we want to tell" she said back then, "We’re trying to get to a point where we’re never rushing for anything."
