There are very few gaming announcements as satisfying as a surprise reveal of a title that’s suddenly available to download on the same day. Especially when it’s a stone cold classic. But this is exactly what happened earlier this month with Metroid Prime Remastered, revealed as part of February’s Nintendo Direct, and now available digitally for Nintendo Switch. Don’t worry, it’s OK to have been distracted by the Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom trailer, we understand. And Samus’s revamped legendary adventures aren’t just available on the Nintendo eShop. You can currently pre-order the physical version of the game which is being released on the 3rd of March.

Given that we’re coming up on 21 years since the original Metroid Prime was released in 2002 in North America, this is as much a chance for new players to discover this critically acclaimed adventure as it is for old hands to revisit their classic memories. The combination of innovative exploration techniques - hello again, Morph Ball and Grapple Beam - and incredible atmosphere as we return to the lonely planet of Tallon IV make this just as thrilling a journey as it was two decades ago. Plus with Metroid Prime 4 on the way, it’s an ideal time to make sure you’ve done your series homework with this hybrid of action, shooting, and adventure. Modern metroidvania fans can’t afford to miss the experience of puzzling through the first in the iconic series.

And Metroid Prime Remastered comes with some new upgrades for 2023. On top of the entirely revamped graphics and sound, the controls have been updated fully for Nintendo Switch. There are now fresh dual-stick control options as well as motion aiming that makes the most of the Switch’s built in gyroscope. But don’t worry, if you want to truly feel the experience in all its original glory, you can always revert to the classic controls and play noughties style. There’s even a hybrid option so you can get the best of both worlds as you join Samus on her epic journey.

From Retro Studios, Metroid Prime Remastered is available on the Nintendo Switch eShop now for £34.99 and you can pre-order the physical edition for release on the 3rd of March 2023.
