Johnny Five is alive again
Dimension grabs remake rights to Short Circuit
We’re edging ever closer to the day when no film will be safe from the mighty merchants of the remake market. Yes, friends, even Johnny Five’s sophisticated weapons system and charming personality can’t save him from Dimension, which has nabbed the rights to remake the 1986 movie.
Those old enough to remember (and those to young who’ve seen the film on DVD) will know that it features a military grade robot who, after a shocking encounter with a lightning bolt, develops a personality and an insatiable curiosity about the world. Helping him on his quest were Ally Sheedy and Steve Guttenberg. We doubt they’ll be back for anything more than a cameo.
Variety reports that Dimension are trying to keep one element intact – they’ve hired original writers SS Wilson and Brent Maddock to take the first crack at the script. Now all we have to do is wonder what a modern-day version of Johnny Five would look like. We’re thinking iPod.
