I've been talking to Nero's development team semi-regularly since its first announcement a year or so ago - they're an engaging bunch of AAA and games press refugees, always excited to talk up their first indie project. And yet what they come out with almost never makes any sense (a choice quote from an old preview: "jellyfish are proof of the beauty of the universe").
By now, I'm pretty sure that's the point. The first-person environmental puzzler draws clearly on the likes of Myst and Portal for its gameplay, but what's actually going on around that is a total mystery - hooded figures with neon facepaint, a decaying, naturalistic fantasy-scape and, yes, levitating jellyfish regularly appear without reason.
It's a game that touts its story elements in the way a shooter might with a new mechanic - you won't understand until you get your hands on it. It seems we're finally about to find out why.
Alongside the launch trailer above comes the announcement that Nero will be released as a timed exclusive on Xbox One this Friday, 15th May. The game's website still lists PC, Wii U and 3DS as platforms, but no indication's been given of when Nero will hit their respective download services.
