It's almost time to celebrate Independence Day, and not the kind with fireworks and an assortment of grilled meats. Independence Day: Resurgence is just weeks away from its June 23 premiere (in the UK; the film opens in the US on June 24), and 20th Century Fox has not one, not two, but three new videos for you. The first is a TV spot focusing on Dylan Hiller, son of Will Smith's character from the first Independence Day:
The other two videos are behind-the-scenes featurettes, one giving you a tour of the Utah salt flats (spoiler: there's a lot of salt, and it's very flat - honestly, I wouldn't recommend a vacation there anytime soon, aliens or no) and the other showing off the "space tug" that Liam Hemsworth pilots.
I like seeing that the tug is a practical effect. The original Independence Day featured some of the most groundbreaking special effects work of its time, but remember that the White House being destroyed - one of the most iconic shots in all of movie history - was largely a practical production. We'll see how tightly ID4: Resurgence holds onto those roots in a few weeks.
Directed by Roland Emmerich and starring Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, Brent Spiner, Liam Hemsworth, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe, and Sela Ward, Independence Day: Resurgence opens in UK cinemas on June 23, 2016 before hitting US theatres a day later.
