Bucking his trend for only directing his own personal projects, Alejandro González Iñárritu is reportedly set to take the reigns on Warner’s upcoming adaptation of 19th Century revenge story The Revenant .
The film is based upon the novel of the same name by author Michael Punke, and tells the story of a fur trapper who is attacked by a bear and left with seemingly mortal injuries.
His Captain attempts to carry him back to the ship, before realising he’s onto a loser and hiring two men to stay with him and bury him after his death.
They have other ideas however, deciding to rob the trapper and leave him for dead. One improbable survival story later, and our man is out for revenge upon the pair who screwed him over.
The film’s eventual lead can prepare himself for a fairly gruelling time of things, with a 3,000 mile trek to weather before his character can even begin to start exacting vengeance. Whoever they cast will need to perfect their “ruggedly determined” face in the mirror.
Iñárritu’s films often concern themselves with people pushed to the limits of their capabilities, so in that respect the project looks a pretty good fit for the Mexican.
Obviously this one is at a very early stage, but expect a slew of rumours concerning potential leading men to come your way very soon…
