Immortals tops the US box office
Slays Adam Sandler's Jack and Jill
Tarsem Singh’s swords and sandals spectacular Immortals hacked and slashed its way to the top of the US box office this weekend, beating Adam Sandler’s twin comedy Jack And Jill into second place.
The 3D action-fest took $32 million in its first weekend; not the most jaw-dropping haul for a 3D film, but more than enough to trump Jack And Jill ’s $26 million. Puss In Boots found itself shunted down to third place after a couple of weeks on top. However, it still enjoyed a respectable $25.5 million weekend that pushed its overall take beyond the $100 million mark.
Elsewhere, Brett Ratner’s controversial publicity-generating techniques couldn’t stop Tower Heist from sliding to fourth place and a $13.2 million weekend. Meanwhile, the week’s third new release didn’t fare quite so well as its companions, with Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar making just $11.5 million in the fifth spot.
Harold And Kumar 3D Christmas took a meagre $5.9 million in sixth place, with sci-fi thriller In Time adding just over $4 million down in seventh. Paranormal Activity 3 scraped together a further $3.6 million which finally took its overall pot over $100 million.
Footloose and Real Steel complete the top ten with respective weekends of $2.7 and $2 million. Finally, any of this week’s list hoping to improve their fortunes next time around might do well to reign in their expectations… Breaking Dawn arrives on US screens in a few days time!
