Covering the same ground as 2008's The Baader Meinhof Complex – young, sexy activists in ’60s Germany swept up in revolution-cum-terrorism – docu filmmaker Andres Veiel’s first feature benefits from a narrower focus.

Bernward (August Diehl), the son of an infamous Nazi, begins an affair with Gudrun Ensslin (Lena Lauzemis), which turns sour when she falls for trainee terrorist Andreas Baader (Alexander Fehling).

This is a shrewd two-pronged portrait of psychological unravelling against a vast political backdrop, with a daring, disturbing performance from Lauzemis.
