This was going to be a straight story about how Toejam and Earl: Back in the Groove met its Kickstarter goal overnight and is currently sitting at over $430,000 of its $400,000 goal. I was even going to mention that fact that nostalgia is clearly the best fuel for our Kickstarter desires.
But no, then it became apparent that a lone person is so passionate about the Toejam and Earl sequel from original creator Greg Johnson that they have spent over $10,000 on the ultimate Kickstarter tier of ‘Party On! Funkopotamous!’ Spending $10,000 - that’s 6,743.19 Great British Pounds - means you get to attend a board game party with the dev team and other ‘game industry people’ (travel not included) as well as becoming an in game helpful Earthling and a slew of other exclusive rewards.
Now funded for PC - another $150K means a PS4 port - Back in the Groove is aiming to be the true sequel to the 1991 Mega Drive Classic with plenty of brightly coloured 90s inspired visuals and randomly generated levels. It’ll have four player split-screen and online co-op and promises 3D terrain that won’t make us “sick and confused with an over-the-shoulder POV camera.”
With over 20 hours on the clock there’s still time to invest in the project, whether you’d like to spend $10,000 or slightly less. This is another sign that Kickstarter can still have exceptionally positive results when it comes to gaming but we tend to have eyes on our nostalgic past rather than the unknown future.
