The nominees for this year's Hugo Awards (chosen by the membership of the World Science Fiction Society) have been announced, and it looks very much like Doctor Who's going to win "Dramatic Presentation, Short Form" for the second year running... unless the vote is split!
Three Who stories have been nominated for this category: "Army of Ghosts"/"Doomsday", "The Girl in the Fireplace" and "School Reunion". They're up against an episode of Battlestar Galactica, "Downloaded", and "200", the 200th episode of SG-1. We reckon "The Girl in the Fireplace" should win. It's bloody ace.
In the films category ("Dramatic Presentation, Long Form"), Children Of Men is up against Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, The Prestige, A Scanner Darkly and V for Vendetta. Come on, Children Of Men deserves to win that one, right?
Meanwhile, in the novel category, the following five books will be fighting it out: Eifelheim by Michael Flynn, His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik, Glasshouse by Charles Stross (go Charlie! go Charlie!), Rainbows End by Vernor Vinge, and Blindsight by Peter Watts.
Oh, and our very own Dave Langford's up for his squillionth Hugo as Best Fan Writer, of course. Goodness knows what he does with them all. He must have a garage full of the things. It'd take him a week just to dust them all.
The winners will be announced at the 65th Worldcon, which takes place from 30 August to 3 September in Yokohama, Japan.
