Hugh Jackman has been talking a lot about his future as Wolverine of late, stating that he would happily go on playing the character until he dies during an interview with Cigar Aficionado (via E! Online).
Having recently watched Birdman, in which Michael Keaton’s character struggles to move out of the shadow of a famous superhero role, Jackman apparently told his wife, "The moral is that I should never stop playing Wolverine… I’ve got to find a way to keep playing him until I die."
"I know that someday they’ll recast the role with another actor," continues Jackman. "I’d be happy if the role was eventually recast. It would mean that it had become iconic."
However, as long as he is in situ as the cigar-chomping badass, Jackman is determined to make sure he continues raising his game from one film to the next.
"I always want to be in better shape than I was for the last one," he says. "I don’t believe in stagnation. People say they try to maintain the status quo. But I believe the natural cycle means you’re either advancing and getting closer to something or you’re receding."
Jackman can next be seen as Wolverine in X-Men: Apocalypse, which will open in the UK on 19 May 2016 and the US on 27 May 2016.
