Howard Stern lays audio smackdown on gamers
Perma-cranky media mogul lays into TooManyGames attendees
Howard Stern, the self-appointed King of all Media, is catching some heat from the gaming community after airing a 20-minute long segment on his Sirius XM satellite show mocking attendees at the recent TooManyGames 2011 event in Philadelphia.
And yes, the following audio clips aren't just NSFW, they're NSFPMASWYSBDSE (Not Suitable For Pretty Much Any Situation Where You Should Be Doing Something Else):
Part 1:
Part 2:
The on-air piece features Stern show correspondent Woflie interviewing gaming fans at TooManyGames, while Howard and Robin basically deride them for being useless human beings. Admittedly, many of the people caught on tape are amusing to listen to, but Stern's clich%26eacute; rant on their sexless, basement dwelling, unemployed lives is just... weak.
Here's the thing: Howard Stern is great (Robin I could do without). He's an entertainer; one of the business' greatest self-promoters. As a former radio guy, I respect the influence he's had on the industry and his unwavering commitment to staying true to his shtick. Where my allegiance wavers, however, is when he gets on these rants about people or groups he has no actual knowledge of, only to turn around the next second and bemoanthat no one understands him. Sure, it's all for a laugh, but the joke is way funnier when you have at least some clue what you're talking about.
Or maybe I'm just letting him get under my skin. That's his talent, after all.
