Get more Hogwarts Legacy spell slots and you can carry more spells to quickly swap between. It's an important thing to sort out because as you learn more magic you'll want to equip more and more to quickly use as you play. You only start the game with four slots, which soon forces you to make hard choices about what you take out into the world with you. So how do you get more, and quickly?

Much like Hogwarts Legacy gear slots, you'll always want as many spell slots as you can get, so you can keep as many Hogwarts Legacy spells equipped as possible. However, while the Hogwarts Legacy Merlin Trials will get you more gear slots by completing challenges, unlocking more Hogwarts Legacy spell slots is all down to the Talent system, basically a set of RPG skill trees. You'll have to be a fair way into the Hogwarts Legacy story before you can start collecting the Talent points you need, but here's how to use them to get more Hogwarts Legacy spell slots once you can.

To get more spell slots in Hogwarts Legacy, you will need to play the campaign until you unlock Talents (which is one of our key Hogwarts Legacy tips). These are additional abilities you can make use of with Talent points you earn as you level up. The best way to do this faster is to complete challenges, missions, and sidequests to earn as much XP as possible. Check your Gear page and look at the upper-left corner of your screen if you're not sure what level you're at, or to see how much XP you need for the next level.

Once Talents is unlocked, you'll earn a Talent point each time you go up a level. You'll also immediately unlock one Talent point for every XP level you reached after the fifth. This means that if you unlock Talents and you are already at Level 12, you will have seven points to spend.

How do I unlock Talents?

You will only unlock Talents after completing a main quest called Percival Rackham's Trial. This is a lengthy mission away into the game that will take place with Professor Fig, involving puzzles and battles against Pensieve Protectors, Guardians, Sentries, and Sentinels. Once you finish the final boss battle, talk to the painting of Rackham to unlock Talents.

Where are the spell slot upgrades in Talents?

To get more spell slots in Hogwarts Legacy you need to purchase the Spell Knowledge Talents from the Core skill tree. After unlocking Talents and opening it from the main menu, you will see there are five Talent branches to choose from:

  • Dark Arts
  • Core
  • Spells
  • Stealth
  • Room of Requirement

Spell Knowledge is a Core Talent. If you have enough points, just go to the Core tab and select one of the three Spell Slot upgrades. They cost one Talent point each, but be careful: you cannot get these points back later, so be sure to check your options carefully before you choose.

The release of Hogwarts Legacy has been the subject of criticism and debate due to J.K. Rowling’s public stance on gender identity, which continues to challenge the inclusivity at the heart of the Harry Potter community. Here is our explainer on the Hogwarts Legacy controversy.
