HBO keen for Game Of Thrones to extend further than seven seasons
While the fifth season of Game Of Thrones looming on the horizon, fans of the show will be increasingly aware that the story may be gradually coming to an end, with showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff having envisaged the show concluding in the seventh season.
And while that’s as far as the principle cast’s contracts extend, HBO are understandably keen for the show to continue beyond that, a view expressed to Entertainment Weekly by programming president Michael Lombardo.
“This is the hard part of what we do,” says Lombardo. “We started this journey with David and Dan. It’s their vision. Would I love the show to go 10 years as both a fan and a network executive? Absolutely.”
“We’ll have an honest conversation that explores all possible avenues,” he continues. “If they weren’t comfortable going beyond seven seasons, I trust them implicitly and trust that’s the right decision - as horrifying as that is to me.”
“What I’m not going to do is have a show continue past where the creators believe where they feel they’ve finished with the story.” Amen to that.
Game Of Thrones season 5 begins in the US on 12 April 2015, before airing in the UK the following day.
