Halo 5: Guardians is a game about an interplanetary hunt for a legendary cyber-augmented soldier gone AWOL. It's got lots of new modes, new features, new faces, and is the first all-new Halo game on the Xbox One. Maybe that's why it's so baffling that the launch trailer features a song from 2006 by not-nearly-as-relevant-as-they-once-were rock band, Muse:
Don't get me wrong, I actually really like Muse. But the only reason I can think of for this musical selection are the lyrics ("No one's gonna take me alive / You and I must fight to survive") and that seems like pretty low-hanging fruit. The song's not quite old enough to be considered a classic, and the footage doesn't really sync to the beat.
If, unlike me, you can set aside how distracting that song is, there's actually a lot of new footage and interesting teases to enjoy. Cortana's creator, Doctor Halsey, is shown with both of her arms intact (which they were not at the end of Halo 4), so I'd wager that either future space-tech made her better or we're going to see a flashback delving into Master Chief's history. Another interesting shot is Locke confronting Chief, if not for the tension between the two protagonists then for the lava and Forerunner tech in the background, which would hint to me that this journey will lead to a world where Forerunner artifacts are forged.
Microsoft is advertising Halo 5 as "the greatest hunt in gaming history." We'll find out how true that is on October 27.
