A gypsy-flavoured answer to The Buena Vista Social Club, British-Asian director Jasmine Dellal’s diverting concert doc hits both musical and ethnographic paydirt. The filmmaker joins the dots between generations of Roma society hailing from all over: India, Germany, Spain, Macedonia. Shadowed across the States (at times by legendary lenser Albert Maysles) on their sell-out 2001 tour, the disparate band of performers fail at first to gel, personally and artistically. It’s a slow, sometimes grating process for an hour or so, but once everyone wises up to their shared heritage, a euphoric celebration of what it means to be a gypsy takes flight.
